Today we’re throwing back to the Golden Age of American illustration with three October covers from The Saturday Evening Post. These lavish fall images were all created by German-American illustrator Joseph Christian Leyendecker, who, along with Norman Rockwell, was one of the Post’s most prolific and well-known cover artists. Between the years of 1896 and 1943, Leyendecker created more than 400 Post cover illustrations, while also active as an advertising illustrator famous for his work for Arrow Collars. He also contributed his artwork to the US Department of War, creating posters in support of the World War II effort. Leyendecker was the subject of a short documentary film entitled Coded, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. These three featured covers are all Halloween themed, perfect for spooky season.
