This year’s gift envelope is a montage of poster art from the Works Progress Administration (WPA), a New Deal agency that provided jobs for the unemployed during the Great Depression. The WPA created vibrant and bold poster art from 1935 until 1943 as part of its efforts to employ artists.  These posters promoted public programs, events, and causes, ranging from national parks and public health initiatives to cultural events and educational campaigns. The WPA’s poster art is celebrated for its distinctive style, blending modernist aesthetics with a focus on accessibility and civic engagement. Renowned artists such as Richard Halls, Vernon Simpson, and Erik Hans Krause contributed their distinctive styles to poster projects promoting uniquely American destinations, performances, and messages.

Our gift envelope’s gallery of WPA poster art was curated and assembled into layout by our Asgard Press Creative Director, Pamela McKamey, from the Library of Congress digital collection, which holds over 900 examples of these historical pieces of artwork.
