“Gone With The Wind” Star Vivien Leigh born this day, 1913.
GONE WITH THE WIND; 1939; Studio: MGM; Director: Victor Fleming; Cast: Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Leslie Howard, Olivia de Havilland. In a year often considered Hollywood’s greatest, Gone with the Wind may be the best of the best – the movie won ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture – although its glorification of the slave-owning South is deeply problematic. Based on the 1936 Margaret Mitchell novel, the film follows Georgia-born Scarlett O’Hara (Leigh), determined daughter of a plantation owner, in her quest to control her own destiny.
Gable’s rough-hewn but lovable rogue, Rhett Butler, served as the template for many future movie mavericks, including Harrison Ford’s Han Solo in 1977’s Star Wars. To cast the two lead roles, the studio interviewed over a thousand actors. During production, the director’s chair became a revolving door of talent, as several men took the helm during the troubled production. The results, however, speak for themselves; adjusting for inflation,Gone with the Wind remains the biggest box office earner in movie history. “Tomorrow is another day!
