The transportation and navigation of years gone by is fascinating to us, probably because we’ve become used to GPS systems, on-board computers, and even self-driving cars. But before all of that was available, people traveled by less automated, but still highly sophisticated, methods. The development of the steam engine in the 1700’s eventually led to the first working locomotive in 1804, and long-distance travel by train was born. Trains have captured the imagination for generations, perhaps due to their observable mechanics, their iconic designs, or their solid stability and strength. Railway museums showcasing early train engines and cars are still popular today.
Before GPS was widely available, people navigated their way through the world using maps (yes, those folded paper things with colorful shapes and words, in case you have forgotten!). You may remember your parents (or yourself) keeping a road atlas in the car for long trips or just in case. Many vintage maps are works of art, illustrated in great detail, even if the boundaries or borders have completely shifted since they were created.
