Pulp magazines hit their peak of popularity from the 1920s – 1940s and pulp science fiction was no exception. Named for the cheap wood pulp the stories were printed on, pulps succeeded with readers through a mix of exploitation, sensationalism, and fantasy. Pulp science fiction explored story lines with themes of science, space, aliens, technology, and the future, often speculating on the consequences of these ideas and issuing social commentary. Many science fiction authors who later became famous, such as Isaac Asimov, got their start writing for the pulps. The covers of these magazines were printed on higher-quality glossy paper and featured full-color illustrations, while interior images remained black and white with lesser detail due to the coarser paper of the inside pages.
