Science Wonder Quarterly; Cover Art: Frank R. Paul; Steller Publishing, Winter 1930.

Science Wonder Quarterly was a companion publication to Hugo Gernsback’s monthly Science Wonder Stories and was briefly published in 1929 and 1930. Science Wonder Quarterly, which was revised to Wonder Stories Quarterly in the summer of 1930, focused mainly on interplanetary stories and tales of space travel. Each issue featured a full-length novel and was notable for publishing many translated stories from German authors during a time of anti-German sentiment between World War I and World War II. Hugo Gernsback himself was from Luxembourg and spoke fluent German, and defended challenges to his publishing decisions by asserting that the national origin of the stories had no bearing on their selection as science fiction. The cover art for the Winter 1930 issue of Science Wonder Quarterly was created by artist Frank R. Paul, Hugo Gernsback’s favored artist who contributed nearly every cover for Gernsback’s publications from 1914 onward. Austrian-born Paul moved to Paris at the age of 17 where he discovering an interest in drawing and painting. In 1908, Paul traveled to the United States, eventually ending up in New York and starting a career in art at the age of 28. Beginning as a newspaper artist for The Jersey Journal, Paul eventually became an independent artist for the publishing industry when his agent connected him with Gernsback. Using bold colors, dramatic compositions, and an innate ability to render highly inventive and fantastic scientific concepts, Paul has in many ways defined science fiction illustration. He painted the first science fiction cover for the very first science fiction magazine, Amazing Stories, in 1926 and his visions of spaceships, robots, and disc-shaped flying saucers established the tropes we still see in popular culture today. In fact, his paintings of flying saucers predate the first modern sightings of UFOs by two decades. Paul’s artistic emphasis on machines over people set an on-going trend for sci-fi illustration and even as sci-fi illustration becomes more sophisticated, Paul’s influence endures.
