Cleopatra; 1963; Studio: 20th Century Fox; Director: Joseph L. Mankiewicz; Cast: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Rex Harrison. The epic movie Cleopatra is famous for its opulent scenery, cast of thousands, and the star power of its leading actors. Elizabeth Taylor set the Hollywood precedent for today’s high celebrity salaries and royalties through her unprecedented contract with 20th Century Fox, guaranteeing her a one-million-dollar payment and a share of the box office sales for her titular role. Though Taylor was not the first actress to be considered for the part, she was one of the only aspects of the film that remained consistent throughout filming. Producer Walter Wanger pitched the film concept to executives at Fox in 1958 and began casting before the script was even written. Originally slated for a six-month shoot in Britain, filming for Cleopatra stretched to almost a year due to elaborate sets, costume changes, and frequent rewrites, and was eventually moved to Italy for better weather. Taylor fell seriously ill early in production, causing further delays, and pushing the budget from a projected $2 million to a staggering $40 million (equivalent to over $350 million today). This astronomical cost nearly bankrupted 20th Century Fox, though the film eventually broke even in 1966 with the sale of the television broadcast rights to ABC for a record five million dollars. Despite these setbacks, Cleopatra was popular with audiences, who relished the film’s breathtaking scenery and costumes, as well as the captivating performances of Taylor and co-stars Richard Burton and Rex Harrison. Cinematographer Leon Shamroy won an Academy Award for his stunning visuals and sweeping landscapes, while Irene Sharaff and Vittorio Nino Novarese also took home an Oscar for their elaborate, historically inspired costume design. Director Joseph Mankiewicz also acted as screenwriter, feverishly writing the epic as production went along. The scandalous off-set affair between Taylor and Burton, both married at the time, dominated the tabloids and ensured audience turn-out at the theater, as fans flocked to see the two partnered on screen. Today, Cleopatra remains one of the most lavish movies ever made.
