Monday Movies with Marilyn…
2021 Vintage Movie Posters Calendar Sneak Peek: “Some Like it Hot”
SOME LIKE IT HOT; 1959; Studio: United Artists; Director: Billy Wilder; Cast: Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, George Raft
This hit romantic comedy, adapted from the 1935 French film, Fanfare of Love, follows two musicians (Curtis and Lemmon) that witness a mob hit and hide out as women. Things get complicated when one of them is attracted to a girl named Sugar (Monroe), and invents another identity as a millionaire (Curtis doing his best Cary Grant impersonation) to woo her.
The two stars tested their female personas on the studio lot to see if they could pass as women, and when no one questioned their identities, they knew the film would work. Monroe sang four songs on the soundtrack, but proved to be very difficult to work with, often flubbing or forgetting her lines – one three-word line took forty-seven takes to get right. Nevertheless, the film garnered six Oscar nominations and remains one of the great comedy classics of all time. “I’m a man!” “Well, nobody’s perfect.”
