Monday Morning Movie Mystery…

2021 Vintage Movie Posters Calendar Sneak Peek: Alfred Hitchcock’s TO CATCH A THIEF.

TO CATCH A THIEF;  1955;  Studio:  Paramount;  Director:  Alfred Hitchcock;  Cast:  Cary Grant, Grace Kelly

Based on a 1952 novel, this whimsical Hitchcock romp makes excellent use of Cary Grant’s natural blend of elegance and humor as erstwhile jewel thief John “The Cat” Robie, who has to defend his reputation as a reformed criminal when a series of burglaries committed on the French Riviera seem as if they could only have been accomplished by the Cat.  Trying to catch the copycat puts Robie on a collision course with a rich widow’s daughter, Frances Stevens (Kelly).

Suggestive lines of dialogue exchanged by Grant and Kelly during the picnic were ad-libs contributed by the actors on the spot.  Kelly met future husband Prince Rainier of Monaco during production.  Although Grant had planned to retire from acting prior to this film, To Catch a Thief convinced him to put that plan on hold;  he continued to act until 1966.  “I’m in love with you.”  “Now that’s a ridiculous thing to say.”
